ABOUT ME · VAN-PHUC BUI

I work on satellite 5G. And I still return to the fundamentals.

I'm Van-Phuc Bui, a wireless communications engineer based in Aalborg, Denmark. I currently develop software for satellite-based 5G NR. Before that, I spent several years researching wireless systems, satellite networks and directions for future 6G.

Even after years of studying and working in this field, I sometimes ask: do I really understand FFT, in-phase and quadrature components, OFDM and channel estimation from first principles, or have I just become comfortable using them? That question is why I started VietWireless.

CURRENT WORK

From 5G standards to real signals and working code.

Since 2025, I've worked with the 5G NTN New Radio team at GateHouse Satcom, developing and testing software for satellite-connected 5G systems. Much of my work involves the physical layer (PHY): transmit and receive processing, timing and frequency synchronization, channel estimation, demodulation and challenges specific to satellite links.

What makes this work interesting is connecting different perspectives on the very same signal: a 3GPP requirement, a mathematical equation, complex signal samples in memory, the processing chain in code, and results from test equipment. A concept may look simple on paper yet raise difficult questions in a real implementation.

WHY VIETWIRELESS EXISTS

First of all, it's a notebook for organizing my own understanding.

One day I might be reading 3GPP; another day I'm debugging a receiver; later I open an old textbook to revisit a fundamental idea. When I only solve the immediate problem, knowledge remains scattered across notes, code and documents. I wanted a place to connect those pieces into a coherent learning path I could return to.

My approach is to begin with the technical question, build intuition through visual examples, introduce the mathematics and its assumptions, test with a numerical example or simulation, and connect the result back to code and standards. Trying to explain something clearly is often how I discover what I still don't fully understand.

Intuition

What problem are we solving? Why do we need this idea?

Mathematics

What do the variables, transformations and assumptions mean?

Visualization

Check our understanding with diagrams, examples and interactive labs.

Implementation

Relate each concept to code, signals and real systems.

These are personal notes, not official materials from any of my past or present employers, and not a replacement for textbooks or 3GPP specifications. I'll continue revising them whenever I find a clearer way to understand or explain a topic.
